Visiting Ecuador
is an excellent option to discover the magic of South
America.
It is a beautiful country with a 270,000 square kilometer
area. It is also the smallest country in the Andean Region
and one of the 17 most biologically diverse nations on
the planet. Ecuador is in the middle of the world and the
Equator divides the country in 2 hemispheres: North and
South.
It has 10 National Parks of great extension such as Cuyabeno,
Yasuni, Sangay and the Galapagos National Park, which are
part of the World Biosphere Reserve declared by UNESCO.
There are also 16 ecological and geo-botanical reserves
with a unique endemic flora and fauna in the world, besides
50 ecosystems which have the biggest quantity of flora
and fauna per squared kilometer.
Moreover, Ecuador has incredible snowcapped mountain peaks
imbedded in the ranges of the Andes that extend through
the enigmatic Amazon jungle. To the west, the Galapagos
Islands are the biggest natural fauna laboratory, considered
World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
This beautiful
country is home of 19% of the planet’s
birds, 411 species of amphibians half of which are endemic.
This is why scientists and students consider this country
a "unique place in the planet."
Ecuadorian culture and people are interesting, as well.
On one hand Ecuador is a multicultural country because
of the variety of races and the ancestral cultures as
Indigenous, Black, “Cholos” and “Mestizos”,
and on the other hand it is multiethnic because of the
native ethnic groups with a total of 13 indigenous nationalities. |

COAST
This is one of the three natural regions of which continental
Ecuador is divided. It is located between the Pacific Ocean
and the Andes Highlands. The coastal region is made of
a warm climate and a wonderful landscape. Even though, there
are some variations from the northern tropical forest and
the southern deserted plains. This region was home of the Machalilla culture,
one of the most ancient cultures that inhabited America..
The Costa Azul offers beautiful beaches with white
sand and brilliant sun that invite our visitors to enjoy
a pleasant climate and practice aquatic sports. |

HIGHLANDS
The Andes is the largest mountain range in the Americas and
one of the most important in the world. It is a huge
mountain mass that runs south-north direction, through the
Pacific coast, over 7,500 kilometres. The Highlands preserve
the unique ecosystems of the Andean moor, summits and valleys
of great beauty. All these are complemented with handicrafts,
gastronomy, and other cultural expressions that have proudly
survived through the years. |

AMAZON
The Amazon Region extends on an area of 120,000 square
kilometers (46,800 square miles) of exuberant vegetation,
characteristic of the tropical rainforests. The Amazon
ecosystem, especially the tropical rain forest, contains
the richest and the most complex flora and fauna habitats
of the world. The existence of a fertile flora and fauna,
in addition to extraordinary variations of the macro and
micro habitats are the most important characteristic in
this region.
Depending on their survival needs, diverse ethnic groups
have occupied this natural landscape before the colonial
period. As part of this special environment, they have
extracted ancestral useful knowledge of the Ecuadorian
Amazon natural resources such as the ethno geobotany. |

GALAPAGOS
This oceanic archipelago lies roughly 1,000 Kilometers
(620 miles) off the continental Ecuador. It is made of
13 big islands, 6 islands and more than 40 smaller ones
of volcanic origin. This extraordinary natural laboratory
is a fusion of peculiar fauna and flora species of a unique
natural value in the world. In 1976, the Galapagos National
Park was declared World Heritage Site by UNESCO and later
on it was designated a World Biosphere Reserve.
Giant turtles, marine and terrestrial iguanas altogether
with the small lava lizards are the most recognized families
of reptiles. The Galapagos reptiles, half of the bird species,
32% of the plants, and 25% of the fish, as well as a good
number of invertebrates are endemic of this natural sanctuary. |
